Nuts & Bolts of Postural Alignment: In Yoga & Life

We will begin this workshop with our foundation for standing poses, the feet. We will ground the four corners of our feet, learn the three arches, experiment with supination and pronation and the impact of rolling feet out or in on the knees and hips. We will do experiments that help us understand our habits on our feet- do you balance forward or back? Does one corner of your foot have a harder time rooting and how do you plug it in? We will also look at the moving foot, a healthy roll and push off. We will practice exercises that strengthen and stretch muscles of the feet for healthy function. We will discuss shoes and foot health and will address bunions, hammer toes, plantar fascial issues and other foot-health questions. We will play with balance poses, yoga postures, walking as we learn. Then we will end with a delicious foot massage

Please bring  a few small stones or game board pieces, your favorite lotion or balm, and socks.

Saturday, September 30th- 4:30-6:30 AST

In the second session we will look more closely at the knees and hips in relation to the feet in a variety of bodies. We will address knee misalignment in yoga poses that can lead to knee pain and wear and tear on cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. We will focus on how to keep knees safe in yoga and life. We will address movement possibilities in the knees which cause injury to this hinge joint. We will understand the importance of noticing the relationship between hips and feet as both can put strain on the knees. We will learn landmarks of the pelvis- sit bones, pubic bone, and tailbone- the diamond of the pelvic floor, and how best to align these in various yoga postures and real-life activities.

Sunday, October 1st- 4:30-6:30 AST

In our final session, we will connect the lower body to the torso & head~ aligning the spine over the feet, knees and pelvis so that it functions best as the spring it is. We will feel into postural balance on the wonderful lower body foundation we are developing. We will practice holding our yoga poses and moving with ease using our conscious foundation, new alignment strategies, myofascial slings and the hot air balloon that can lift us into healthy postural awareness. Head, shoulders and spine will come onboard so we feel our posture anew.

Alaskans, I hope you can join me for this awareness adventnure through the body.
